The group was crafted with inspiration from the neoclassic furniture of Sweden in the late 18th century. This style, sometimes known as the "Gustavian" design style, uses simplified yet elegant forms to create pieces that have a light and airy look. Each piece in this group is crafted from Elm veneers and Asian hardwood solids with pewter hardware adding a finishing touch.
From the Manufacturer
The design inspiration for Commonwealth was the neoclassic furniture of Sweden in the late 18th century, often referred to as “Gustavian” design-- named after King Gustav III of Sweden, who was heavily influenced by the French style of the time. Gustavian pieces interpreted the French neoclassical style elements into a simplified yet elegant form -- the pieces were light and airy, usually painted and with less serious detail than the French style. The pared down styling, modest scale and fresh finishes give these pieces broad appeal with today’s customers. Commonwealth is a style that mixes well with everything, and its 3 finishes increase its flexibility – Tobacco (medium brown with gray undertones, lightly distressed), Peppermill (translucent black that allows the grain to show through, lightly distressed), and Toasted Almond (Tobacco tops combined with a pale taupe painted finish, medium distressing, with visible brush strokes for added textural appeal). Commonwealth is constructed of Elm veneers and Asian hardwood solids. The hardware features an antiqued pewter finish.
